Today is my stop on the wonderful blog tour for Nicky Clifford‘s debut book ‘Never Again’. I have been following the tour and visiting all the wonderful blogs along the way. Reviews have been amazing for this book, and their were also some fantastic interviews with Author Nicky Clifford. You can see the bloggers that took part below.
Mountains, Mystery, Romance: Can you run from your past?
Harriet Anderson’s life is spiralling out of control. Unused to such mayhem, she ditches her high-powered job to take refuge in the Swiss Alps where she meets Philippe Smith, a crime writer with a dark and shadowy past. Thrown together by chance, is their fate intertwined? Will the karma and romance of the mountains and the quaintness of the Alps soothe their troubled souls?
Or will their rocky paths create avalanches that cannot be avoided…
Self-published via Amazon Kindle and CreateSpace.
For an Author’s first published book, this is an exceptional one. Nicky Clifford has given us beautifully serene setting in the mountains of the Alps. She brought to life an array of different but fully developed characters, some we grow to love and root for, and some we want to accidentally have a little slip down those beautiful Alps!
The book includes many things that I love, great descriptions which is perfect for imaginative travelling, I have spent many an hour sitting in a cafe besides the wonderful mountains drinking the most amazing hot chocolates filled with piles of whipped cream and marshmallows. (In reality, I was on the sofa with my huge hot chocolates). But a talented Author can transport you, and Nicky Clifford did just that.
Never Again is a great title, as the 2 main characters have been through tough times and both think to themselves, ‘Never Again’ will I let someone in. This is not your traditional boy meets girl, fall in love, happily ever after. Clifford has used great imagination and filled the story with ups, downs, will they – won’t they moments. There is so much drama, and not only from the 2 main characters, but from the brilliant side line characters too. I loved Elspeth best. Have you ever met a ‘Granny’ who gives great advice and who eats more ice cream than real meals! She is brilliant.
“Life is rarely simple…….the bumps make us stronger”, to which quite rightly she got the reply “I’ve had enough bumps for now. Can’t it be someone else’s turn?”
I felt that Nicky has a good insight into people, and to write a believable novel (of this kind), you need to know people.
There are many amusing parts to this narrative where the Author made me chuckle quite a few times with her quiet humour. There are a few characters from Wales visiting the hotel. When questioned on their ‘Welshness‘, one of them says:
“What d’you want us to say ‘boyo’ and ‘valleys’ in every second sentence?”
Never Again is a book that I really enjoyed. I recommend reading it with plenty of hot chocolate ingredients at hand, whipped cream, marshmallows and also a cake or two…or three. There will be more to come from Nicky Clifford, and its going to be fantastic.
Guest review contributed by Chocolate Pages. The best things in the world are books, chocolate, and baking…or at least, so says this blogger. That sounds pretty good to the rest of us too.
