6 people arrested after largest US-Australian meth seizure

Authorities have seized a record 1.7 tonnes of ice bound for Australia, carrying an estimated street value of $1.29 billion.

Police also found 25 kilograms of cocaine, worth $9.5 million, and five kilograms of heroin, worth $2.6 million, in the same shipment as the methylamphetamine. It was the largest single seizure of methamphetamine in the United States and the biggest drug haul bound for Australia.

Customs and Border Protection announced the seizure of the three containers on Thursday, which were meant to be shipped to Australia before being searched on January 11.

Police said the drugs could have led to more than 17 million drug deals. The Americans were identified by Australian police as a 52-year-old man and 46-year-old woman living in Woodstock, Victoria.

The United States outbreaks, which are defined as 3 or more cases, are in New York State, New York City and Washington State. Previous year was the highest number of cases since 2014, which had ten reported cases.

One of the containers authorities say contained close to two tons of methamphetamine and other drugs.

"We continue to pay top dollar for drugs in this country and this is a draw card for selling drugs", AFP Assistant Commissioner Organised Crime Bruce Hill told media on Friday.

Search warrants were also carried out by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia where a significant quantity of suspected proceeds of crime were seized.
