Snow storm marches toward Washington, after pummeling Midwest

The storm is headed east, where it's expected to blanket Washington and Baltimore, forecasters said.

St. Louis registered just over a foot of snow, and the city of Columbia saw more than 2 feet of precipitation, according tothe National Weather Service.

With snow already falling in the nation's capital Saturday, updated forecasts for total snowfall jumped from 2-4 inches to 8-12 inches, CNN meteorologist Robert Shackelford said. "St. Louis is seeing its worst snowstorm in five years".

The weather service issued a winter storm warning for areas of central and southern IL including Springfield, Champaign and Carbondale.

At least five people were killed in crashes on slick roadways in Kansas and Missouri.

The storm hit Kansas and Missouri on Friday and pummeled those states again on Saturday as it extended into parts of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and OH, said U.S. Weather Prediction Center meteorologist Andrew Orrison. Illinois State Police said troopers along the Mississippi River across from St. Louis have responded to more than 100 crashes during the storm. In anticipation of the storm, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Saturday.

Almost 200,000 people were without electricity in Virginia and North Carolina on Sunday morning.

In Kansas City, Missouri, 7 inches of snow was reported early Saturday afternoon.
