In addition to his apparent interest in TCM, Kim is believed to have visited Beijing in order to talk over strategy with Xi regarding a second anticipated US-North Korea summit.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un left Beijing on Wednesday via his personal train, according to reports by Japanese media.

Kim said during his China visit this week that there is no change in North Korea's stance to faithfully carry out the agreement reached with US President Donald Trump during their Singapore summit, and pursue a peaceful resolution through discussion, KCNA said.

The trip - Kim's fourth to China since March - suggests negotiations over North Korea's nuclear arsenal are gaining momentum after months without high-level diplomatic exchanges.

Trump and Kim met in Singapore in June for the first-ever leaders' meeting between their nations, but there has been a standoff ever since, with duelling accusations of bad faith.

Pyongyang has demanded Washington lift sanctions, imposed because of its nuclear and missile tests, and declare an official end to the 1950-53 Korean War.

China could provide economic, political and security guarantees to North Korea in denuclearisation talks, said Hua Po, a Beijing-based independent political commentator.

"Chairman Kim Jong Un's visit to China was at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, of course President Xi would hold meetings and talks with him", Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a regular press briefing, adding that more details would be released later.

North Korea wants relief from the multiple sets of sanctions imposed on it over its nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs, while the U.S. wants them to remain in place until it gives up its arms - something Pyongyang has made no public promise to do.

For Xi, whose country provides a lifeline to North Korea's anemic economy, the meeting with Kim reminds Trump that China's co-operation will make any nuclear deal more effective.
