Nintendo Switch is Now America's Fastest-Selling Gaming Console

"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the biggest Super Smash Bros. ever, and not only is it the fastest-selling game in the series we've ever seen in Europe, it's become our fastest-selling home console game ever", said Nintendo of Europe COO Stephan Bole. According to NPD the Switch has sold more than 8.7 million consoles in the United States since last March, which compares to roughly 29 million for the PlayStation 4 and 25 million for the Xbox One.

The company highlighted 1.4 million unit sales of Super Mario Party since it came out in October, while 2017's Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe hit sales of 4 million, 4.7 million and 5 million units, respectively.

Nintendo isn't quite at the top of the current-gen hardware pile yet (Sony's head start has allowed them to reach almost 90 million PS4s sold, close to the Wii's lifetime of 101.6 million), but they're getting there quickly.

The slowdown stems from China cracking down on shadow lending but the trend has been accelerated by USA tariffs. While there were other factors, the tit-for-tat jabs between the world's biggest economies have played a role.

For the second time in as many months, Nintendo's PR push focused on the USA only and didn't provide any updated global numbers.

Since the Switch launched three years later than its two rivals it'll never catch up, and so direct comparisons between overall sales are essentially meaningless.
