The office of the special counsel, Robert Mueller, has asked the FBI to investigate what appears to be an effort to smear him, stemming from suspicious emails offering women money in exchange for fabricating sexual misconduct claims against him.

Mueller's office has charged 32 people so far, with four former associates of the president pleading guilty and agreeing to cooperate with investigators.

It was not immediately clear if the special counsel was referring to Burkman's claims.

Carr offered no details of the case which may be an effort to discredit Mueller as the investigation continues.

The special counsel office broke its usual silence on Tuesday to confirm to USA media it had been made aware of the saga.

The 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States. When told his view is disputed, Trump asserted: "You can definitely do it with an act of Congress".

The office of Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller has notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation about an alleged scheme in which a woman was offered payment to make false sexual misconduct charges against Mueller.

Burkman gained notoriety when he promoted conspiracy theories regarding the still-unsolved killing in 2016 of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich.

Mueller has been under attack from Trump and his conservative allies since assuming control of the Russian Federation probe in 2017.

"We'll pay you for your time to talk to us about these encounters, but it also says we'll also pay you if you give references", Taub said.

The email, which was screen-grabbed and posted on social media by several journalists, states someone named Bill Christensen recently called the woman and asked questions about Mueller, whom she said she worked for as a paralegal at the San Francisco offices of law firm Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw & Pittman in 1974.

And the entire company appears to have been created around three weeks ago with the sole aim of giving the accusations against Mueller an (incredibly thin) veneer of credibility.

But Mr. Burkman did not reveal the woman, saying only that she is "fearful for her life" and now wishes to remain anonymous, according to media reports.

According to media reports, Surefire is a straw company for US-based Trump activist Jacob Wohl who tweeted on Monday that big allegations against Mueller were on their way. An Internet registry record associated with the "agency" listed the email of Jacob Wohl, a writer for the conservative website Gateway Pundit; a phone number listed in connection with it belongs to Wohl's mother, NBC News reported.

When contacted by NBC News, Wohl denied all involvement.

Around that time, college professor Jennifer Taub, who was a frequent cable news guest where she spoke about the Mueller investigation, was approached by a person from SureFire Intelligence-a bogus "intelligence" firm made up by Wohl, with contact info that reaches his mom. It came from Simon Frick of Surefire Intelligence.

"In addition to any civil liability that they might have for a defamation claim, I think that you could make an argument that this is an effort to obstruct justice", said Barbara McQuade, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of MI.
