Warning: spoilers for tonight's episode of THE WALKING DEAD abound. After months of marketing The Walking Dead's ninth season as "Rick Grimes' final episodes", clearly teasing the death of Andrew Lincoln's long-suffering character, the show just couldn't let Rick go.

Walking Dead director Rosemary Rodriguez shared a selfie of her and Lincoln on set. Which answers the question to Sunday night's episode, titled "What Comes After", pretty clearly.

Good news for THE WALKING DEAD fans! He was rescued by helicopter in the final moments of the episode.

These are the first projects in development from Gimple since being named chief content officer overseeing the "Walking Dead" universe.

Few could have envisioned a better start under Sarri, whose players have nearly instantly adapted to his methods and expectations. Chelsea have been in formidable goalscoring form in the Premier League this season, scoring 24 goals in their 10 games so far.

And now we know why. Right now, we're working on three but there's flexibility in that.

London-born Lincoln, 45, announced his Walking Dead departure earlier this year and viewers have been waiting eagerly to see how his character leaves the show. It's going to show a different situation that Rick is involved in. In that sense, Rick Grimes' final episode is no easy viewing material for longtime fans, but I have faith that this is exactly the kind of emotive shakeup that The Walking Dead has always been in need of. Season Nine has been marketed as the last hurrah for main character Rick Grimes.

The first film will explore where Grimes was taken and "what he faces in the new corner of the zombie apocalypse", AMC said.

"We're going to continue telling Rick Grimes' story in a series of AMC original films". A casual observer might say that AMC would be better off pulling the plug than committing to a tremendously ambitious expanded universe, but maybe the network knows something we don't.

Some actors appear just once in the tribute and there are a few notable absences like Chandler Riggs, who played Grimes' son Carl up until last season, when he died after suffering a bite from a walker. "I don't know but certainly I really think the fans and my character deserves an end point as some time in the future".

"I thought the idea of a character that the audience knows and has lived with - and who has oscillated between psycho and father for nine years - to start in a completely different place, was a really interesting, insane place to begin", he explained. There was a whole lot of hoopla, however, when actor Andrew Lincoln expressed his desire to leave the series after being its primary antagonist since its first episode.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
