Almost 40 per cent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate, while about 25 per cent said they voted to express support for Trump.

The win, she said, was "about stopping the GOP and Mitch McConnell's assaults on Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and the health care of 130 million Americans". Democrats, though, hammered him this cycle by tying him to President Donald Trump, who swooped in with a last-minute endorsement of Paulsen. You go back to 2001, 2000, they think they got jobbed when the Supreme Court stole the election in the Florida recount away from Algore.

"The contrast in this election could not be more clear". Trump told the rally crowd in Macon, Georgia.

"We have seen repeated attempts to divide us with rhetoric created to make us angry and make us fearful", he said in Miami, Florida. "If you can elect Democrats in a good portion of those states, you can prevent Republicans from doing the same kind of gerrymandering in 2021 that they did in 2011".

But if Democrats win, the consensus among pundits and politicians is that Democrats plan to launch some investigations against Trump.

Why are voters so energised?

Down the stretch, Trump hardened his rhetoric on issues that appealed to his conservative core supporters, issuing warnings about a caravan of Latin American migrants headed to the border with Mexico and condemnations of liberal American "mobs".

"A Democratic House means that if the president want to get things done, he's going to have to work across the aisle".

The foursome will also perform in Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh and Bristol, finishing at London's Wembley Stadium. The group is set to reveal all the details of the tour around Monday morning, but Baby Spice.

Some recent events have added a further emotive dimension.

However, even some supporters became jittery after a Florida man and ardent Trump supporter was charged with sending homemade bombs to more than a dozen senior Democrats and other high profile opponents.

Voter turnout in the midterms is usually much lower than in the general elections, but this year seems to be a record year.

But analysts say a sharp rise is likely this year, with voters on both left and right energised by such issues as healthcare and immigration.

History suggests Democrats are likely to make gains during the first midterm election involving Trump. The figure in 2014 was just 27.5 million.

With control of Congress and Trump's agenda at stake, early voting hit record levels and turnout appeared high across the country. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Ride-sharing companies Lyft and Uber will be offering discounted rides to polling stations. The party's task was much more hard in the Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority but Democrats are defending 10 seats in states won by the president two years ago. Elections to 36 state gubernatorial posts and state legislatures are also being held.

The Democratic Party has successfully won control of the U.S. House of Representatives, according to multiple projections.

Trump also pushed back on the idea that the election was a referendum on his presidency and that Democrats reclaiming the House would be a rebuke of him and his policies.

Donald Trump called the California Democrat to congratulate her for her party taking control of the House again. Some are considered vulnerable, as they are in states won by Mr Trump when he was elected in 2016.

With results still coming in, Republicans had a chance to increase their majority in the Senate.

The first polls close at 23:00 GMT (18:00 EST) on Tuesday and while it will take some time to see the full picture emerge, there are some races worth keeping an eye out for. The Blue seek to regain control of Senate and House, while the Red are set to expand their narrow majority. The party will therefore need to keep all 26 their seats and gain two seats to take control of the Senate - a tall order.

Female college graduates in well-off suburbs are in the spotlight because many are voicing disgust with Trump's aggressive rhetoric, and their votes could decide tight races in Democrats' favor.
