"I think that's what you are hearing from Oprah".

Winfrey, who has been urged to run for office for months now, told the crowd: "I'm not trying to test any waters, don't want to go in those waters".

During a stump speech for Republican Georgia gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp on Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence said the American people don't want lawmakers backed and bankrolled by "Hollywood liberals".

The headline "AFTER FAILED HACKING ATTEMPT, SOS LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO GEORGIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY" sat front-and-centre on the secretary of state's government website - directly beneath a voter's guide to polling locations.

"I am an independent woman; I have earned the right to do exactly what I want to do when I want to do it".

"You are on the precipice of an historical election", she said, assuring them, "Nobody paid for me to come here; nobody even asked me to come here".

The comedian emphasized the personal "sacrifice" Winfrey, a registered independent, made by endorsing Abrams, the first female African-American gubernatorial nominee in US history.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp still leads the Secretary of State's office despite being a candidate for governor. "And to vote for myself", Winfrey said to cheers. If elected, Abrams would be the first black woman elected governor in the country.

At a separate appearance with Kemp Thursday morning, Pence mocked Abrams for receiving support from Winfrey and actor Will Ferrell on the campaign trail, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

A robocall apparently from a white supremacist group is injecting racism directly into the race, which has already been fraught with a race-laden debate over ballot access and voter suppression.

Abrams has been largely focused on turning out communities which don't usually turn out in high numbers during midterm elections, such as black voters and young people.

On Sunday, President Trump is rallying for Kemp.

The 64-year-old media titan shared a video on her Instagram page holding a clipboard and knocking on the door of a voter named Denise.

Abigail Collazo, Abrams' director of strategic communications, condemned the robocall and said both Trump and Kemp have contributed to a poisonous atmosphere, adding that Kemp has responded with silence on previous racial attacks on Abrams.
