It summed up a frustrating second day for England, who reduced Sri Lanka to 165-6 only for Roshen Silva's 85 to push them up to 336 in response to England's 290.

Silva and Niroshan Dickwella put on 46 runs for the seventh wicket but the stand that handed Sri Lanka the initiative back was the ninth worth 56 runs between Silva and Akila Dananjaya (31).

Silva had battled through a tough period after lunch, seeing out a testing spell from legspinner Adil Rashid, before settling into a rhythm of picking up runs into the outfield.

Leach came in as night-watchman with one over left to negotiate, which he safely did, playing out a maiden to see England through to the close.

With Ben Foakes for company, Root continued to frustrate the Sri Lanka spinners for another half an hour. Those balls look great, but they're not creating a chance.

England's first innings total was 285 but Sri Lanka were docked five runs after the umpires deemed that Silva did not ground his bat properly while taking a run.

"At one point we were hoping we would have that lead going into our batting but we're feeling good about bowling last on that wicket".

Ben Stokes (19) was promoted to bat at No.3 and was adjudged lbw to Dilruwan Perera on review after the Sri Lankans referred the original decision. Like for the six men prior to him, a failed attempt at reverse sweep proved to be the centurion's undoing as Dhananjaya picked the first of his three quick wickets in the final session that managed to slow down England's charge. England leads the series 1-0 and Curran's effort could help the team win its first series in Sri Lanka in 17 years.

He returned to Pittsburgh last week and even played some pickup basketball at a fitness center. It's been a long, extended staring contest between the star running back and the franchise.

"The next couple of days are going to be exciting for spin bowlers and batters are going to be on their toes", predicted Curran. "We are not so anxious about the five runs".

After Pushpakumara's ugly heave to mid-wicket, Karunaratne and De Silva stayed together for 146 deliveries, repelling all three of England's frontline spinners as well as three exploratory overs from captain Joe Root and a brief burst from James Anderson. "We got a nice score on the board", Curran said.

England captain Joe Root is bowled by Malinda Pushpakumara for just 14 at Pallekele Cricket Stadium.
