Strong 6.8 magnitude quake strikes off Greece

The major magnitude 6.8 quake was not only felt on the Greek island of Zakynthos but in mainland Greece as well, with tremors recorded in Greece's capital Athens.

The natural disaster was also felt on mainland Greece, including in the western town of Pyrgos.

Zakynthos mayor Pavlos Kolokotsas told local media that damage had been reported in some houses, where plaster had cracked and fallen off of walls.

Authorities said three people were taken to a hospital.

"Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and quake resistant construction", the USGS said.

Greece's main quake monitoring centre, Athens' Geodynamic Institute, measured the magnitude at 6.4, and said it had a depth of three miles.

Netizens have begun to share footage documenting the strong quake.

The natural disaster, which struck at 1:54 a.m. local time on Friday, was centered in the Ionian Sea about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Pyrgos, or 282 kilometers (175 miles) southwest of Athens.

In July 2017, two foreigners died and more than 100 people were injured on the Greek island of Kos when an natural disaster shook the popular Greek and Turkish holiday destinations in the Aegean Sea.

Nobody was injured by the tremor, which struck at 01:54 on Friday (22:54 GMT), but there was significant damage to the local port and a 13th Century island monastery south of Zakynthos. More than 140 people were killed in an quake north of Athens in 1999.

Zakynthos is an island which has strict building safety codes due to the number of quakes that occur.
