Saudis Finally Admit Jamal Khashoggi Murdered At Consulate; Will Investigate

"Preliminary investigations... revealed that the discussions that took place between him and the persons who met him... at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul led to a brawl and a fist fight with the citizen, Jamal Khashoggi, which led to his death, may his soul rest in peace", the attorney general said in a statement.

But what do we know of his death so far and how much remains unclear?

A statement released by the Saudis, said the suspects got into a fight with Khashoggi, which lead to his death.

The kingdom has arrested 18 people whom they claim are connected to the incident, reported The Guardian.

In recent days, the United States had cautioned critics to await official results of the investigation, with US President Donald Trump declaring that he was told by the Saudi Crown Prince that "rogue figures" had killed Khashoggi.

The case of Jamal Khashoggi, a man who was once close to the royal Saudi family before a falling out and a self-imposed exile to the U.S., has gripped the world's attention over the past few days since his disappearance on October 2.

But who are these two men?

The Colorado lawmaker, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, urged Trump to immediately recall the acting USA ambassador from Saudi Arabia.

It's believed Jamal Khashoggi was murdered inside his country's embassy in Turkey, causing a diplomatic crisis. It is not confirmed yet whether the 18 detainees include them.

CCTV footage broadcasted on Turkish TV showed vehicles driving up to the consulate before the journalist's visit.

Saudi Arabia's admission comes after Turkish authorities widened their probe on Friday, searching a forest in Istanbul where the body might have been dumped and interviewing the consulate's staff.

Local police searched the Saudi consulate and the consul's residence on October 15 but the investigation is ongoing.

Turkish officials say that Khashoggi - a USA resident - was killed by a 15-member Saudi hit squad after he entered the consulate on October 2.

In a statement, the White House "deepest" condolences to Khashoggi's family, fiancé and friends.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres encouraged a "prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation" into Khashoggi's death. "I think it's a very important first step".

Democratic US Senator Richard Blumenthal told CNN the Saudi explanation "absolutely defies credibility" and called for an global investigation of Khashoggi's death.

"We have nothing to hide", says the crown prince. In Arizona this evening, before Saudi Arabia acknowledged the WaPo columnist had been murdered in its consulate, Trump said he would consider sanctions against that kingdom, would involve Congress in any decision, while making his own "certain recommendations".

Canada, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, among other nations, consider the Muslim Brotherhood to be a terrorist group. The Saudi government has strongly denied having anything to do with the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.
