The other area being demined is around the so-called "Arrow Head Hill", where some of the war's heaviest fighting took place over a strategically important hilltop position. Troops will remain there - but will be unarmed.

Seoul's Defense Ministry said the remains of about 300 South Korean, French and US soldiers are believed to be in the area.

All landmines in the JSA, which is the only portion of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) where forces stand face-to-face, are expected to be removed by military personnel within the next 20 days, South Korea's defence ministry said in a statement on Monday. North Korea is thought to have placed 800,000 to one million landmines on the north side.

On Monday, South Korean army engineers with demining equipment were deployed to the border village of Panmunjom and another frontline area called "Arrow Head Hill" where the Koreas plan their first joint searches for soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War. A 2015 DMZ mine explosion blamed on North Korea that maimed two South Korean soldiers pushed the rivals to the brink of an armed conflict.

According to South Korean government reports, North is believed to have produced 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of weaponized plutonium, enough for at least eight bombs. Aiming to reduce conventional military threats, they also agreed to remove 11 front-line guard posts by December and set up buffer zones along their land and sea boundaries and a no-fly zone above the border to prevent accidental clashes.

A top South Korean official has told MPs North Korea could have up to 60 nuclear weapons.

The troops will try to remove mines on the southern parts of the two sites while North Korea is required to do the same on their northern sides.

South Korea's main spy agency, the National Intelligence Service, did not comment immediately on the disclosure, Sky News reported. "It is also the most basic and primary process for the establishment of new DPRK-US relations and peace mechanism on the Korean peninsula, to which the US was also committed", the KCNA added.

The North entered talks with the United States and South Korea on its advancing nuclear arsenal earlier this year, saying it's willing to negotiate.

Many foreign experts say North Korea are likely running additional secret uranium-enrichment plants.

"But, if the USA doesn't want the end of war, the DPRK will also not particularly hope for it", it added, using the acronym of North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Nuclear diplomacy later came to a standstill amid disputes over how genuine North Korea is about its disarmament pledge. They expressed support for the project during talks last month in Pyongyang, the North's capital.
