No German arms to Saudi until Khashoggi case is clarified: Merkel

Saudi Arabia will prosecute the suspects in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al Jubeir says, in response to a call by Turkey for their extradition.

Turkish officials have said that a Saudi team of 15 men tortured, killed and dismembered the writer in a premeditated act - and has asked that Saudi Arabia hand over the suspects.

The stance led to a clash with France's Macron who told reporters in the Slovak capital Bratislava on Friday that stopping arms sales to Saudi Arabia would be "pure demagoguery".

Hatice Cengiz, the fiancée of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, said Friday she rejected an invitation from President Donald Trump to visit the White House, deeming it an insincere and self-promoting PR move.

"Every day more truth is revealed related to the murder", the Jamal Khashoggi Friends Association said.

The oldest son of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered by officials at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, has left the country with his family despite a travel ban.

"We need to clarify the background of this terrible crime and until that, we will not supply weapons to Saudi Arabia", she added, reiterating comments made earlier this week.

World leaders, meanwhile, continue to urge the Saudi authorities to clarify the circumstances of the journalist's murder.

Turkish police were investigating water samples from a well at the consulate on Thursday after initially being denied access, broadcaster CNN Turk said.

The Turkish government has demanded that Saudi Arabia's government disclose the whereabouts of Kashoggi's body and force his murderers to turn themselves in for trial.

The 59-year-old Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor and a critic of Riyadh, was killed on October 2 while visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain paperwork for his marriage to a Turkish woman.

While he did not mention Saudi Arabia directly, he did acknowledge the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had revoked visas of those implicated. "You have to tell", he said.

Khashoggi's killing has severely damaged the heir to the throne, who many believe must at a minimum have been aware of the Saudi operation, which involved several members of his personal guard and other senior officials. All four of Khashoggi's children are now in the U.S.
