Ibec cancels Saudi event after outcry over journalist's disappearance

In separate remarks Wednesday, both Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo continued their effort to create time for leaders in Riyadh to provide an explanation for Khashoggi's disappearance after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held separate meetings with Turkey's president and foreign minister for around 40 minutes each on Wednesday in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

The three posed for photos, but said nothing together in front of reporters.

Trump has repeated denials by the Saudi king and crown prince that they knew anything about Khashoggi's fate, and he has warned of a rush to judgment.

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, told CNN that the "intel points directly" to Saudi Arabia for Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.

No major decisions are made outside of the ultraconservative kingdom's ruling Al Saud family.

Pompeo has said Riyadh should be given a few more days to complete an investigation into the disappearance of the journalist, a prominent critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The U.S. newspaper said Turkish officials have shared evidence, including details of an audio recording, with Saudi and U.S. officials.

Turkish officials have said privately, without offering evidence, that Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the consulate.

The Saudi Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.

That's one reason some expect Washington to try to help Saudi Arabia find a way out of the political mess it faces over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi.
