Hurricane Oscar gaining strength in Atlantic, but poses no threat yet

Additional strengthening is forecast during the next several days, and Oscar is expected to make a transition to a tropical storm on Sunday. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Saturday afternoon that Oscar was centered about 925 miles (1,485 kilometers) east-southeast of Bermuda, and it was moving west at 17 mph (28 kph).

Forecasters at the Miami-based hurricane center say Oscar "is expected to accelerate quickly toward the northeast through the middle of the week". Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles, the NHC said. Oscar already packs sustained winds around 60 miles per hour.

The chance of formation into a tropical storm through 48 hours remains high - 90 percent - according to the NHC. Hurricane season runs through November 30. "After that time, the system is forecast to turn westward well to the north or northeast of the Lesser Antilles through early next week".
