DeSantis, Gillum use different parts of name to refer to opponent

It's a skill he's going to need more than ever during the next two weeks if he wants to become Florida governor.

Gillum leads DeSantis 52 to 46 per cent, according to the latest polls, but that gap has been narrowing as the campaign has drawn on.

In fact, the text messages show, Gillum was aware that it was a contractor who provided the tickets. He did not immediately return a request for comment. This came during a time when the city of Tallahassee was investigating a local government corruption case.

Corey either arranged or attended seven trips for Gillum in 2016, including a February trip to Tampa to meet with affordable housing developer Peter Leach, one of Corey's clients, and a two-night trip in Atlanta in July.

He released receipts and bank statements last month that proved he paid at least some of his own way.

The Florida Commission on Ethics released 150 pages of documents, which include text messages, emails, and photos that are related to interaction between Gillum, his brother, Corey, and Miller.

Those records indicated that undercover agents gave Gillum a ticket to the Broadway musical Hamilton during a trip to NY in 2016, a revelation that has dominated the second-to-last week of Gillum's historic run for governor. Gillum previously claimed that he received the gift from his brother. The texts also showed that he stayed in a NY hotel room purchased by Miller.

"I should have asked more questions to make sure that everything that transpired was above board", Gillum said, before quickly trying to switch topics.

Adam Corey volunteered as campaign treasurer for Gillum's run for mayor.

But what Gillum said is true. "The goal is obviously to use my candidacy as a way to reinforce, frankly, stereotypes about black men". "Have you seen Hamilton?". "We've got 99 issues and Hamilton ain't one of them". "At the time we believed that they were reserved by friends of Adam's, Mike Miller", he said. DeSantis shot back. "I am not going to bow down to the altar of political correctness". "But you know had the situation been reversed I never would have ever reduced myself to referring to him in such familiar terms".

Democrats were largely inclined to side with Gillum, who by other measures was having a fine day Tuesday.

'Some people were paying more for premiums than for rent, so people couldn't afford it. After college, Gillum went into politics and got elected to the Tallahassee City council at the age of 23, the youngest council member ever.

The Tallahassee mayor took responsibility for "not having asked more questions" about the exchange, but then tried to downplay the issue in the context of the race: "I'm running for governor and the state of Florida, we got a lot of issues", he said.

On Twitter, Kevin Cate, an advisor to the Gillum campaign, called for the texts to stop. But Floridians must soldier on in the few days remaining of the 2018 election cycle and decide whether Gillum is the answer, or just another corruptible "what's in for me" politician.

The story is nearly certain to live on.
