The New York Times cited USA officials as saying China was seeking to use information from the president's calls to learn what Trump thinks, whom he listens to and how best to influence him.

According to the Times report, aides have repeatedly warned Trump that Chinese spies are likely eavesdropping on his calls, but that fact hasn't stopped the president from calling his friends on his personal iPhone, which is no more secure than your own smartphone.

China was quick to dismiss the charges levied by the New York Times article. While they may not have access physically to his phone, Chinese spies could intercept unsecured calls over mobile phone networks or tap the phones of people the President calls. "We can't hand over our government to someone whose deepest, darkest secrets may be in the hands of our enemies", Trump said that June.

While Trump is using his secure landlines more often, aides are said to be frustrated that he has refused to give up his two official iPhones and a personal one.

Comments from China and Russian Federation were dismissive.

According to the report, the discovery was made by White House officials who were alerted by individuals working within these foreign governments. Astute tweeters, however, noted that the message was sent from an iPhone.

Disguised as a porter in an unnamed Trump hotel, the Russian drew his gun during a presidential visit, but it misfired, Sharp wrote.

President Donald Trump has criticized a report by the New York Times about the use of his personal cellphone. A list containing the names of these people are said to be used by China in an attempt to influence the president's thinking on matters important to the country, like the U.S.

Trump followed up his capitalized show of reverence to "Government Phones" by noting that he rarely even uses cell phones, preferring the far more dignified "Hard Lines".
