British Isles brace for Storm Callum as powerful gusts hit Ireland

Two people have been killed after Storm Callum battered parts of the United Kingdom this weekend with torrential rain, flooding, landslides and heavy winds.

Power cuts, travel disruption and hard driving conditions are also predicted, with yellow weather warnings for wind covering Northern Ireland and western parts of Wales, England and Scotland throughout Friday.

A yellow weather warning has been issued across Wrexham as "Storm Callum" continues to bring strong gusts and heavy rain to the area.

Friday's weather could impact travel plans during the morning commute, with Met office warning "road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible".

A man who died after a landslide in south Wales during Storm Callum has been described as a "witty, charming, loyal and attractive son".

"Tuesday will see strong winds in the North, followed by a quiet spell with high pressure from midweek and more unsettled conditions into next weekend".

The majority of FlyBe flights to and from Belfast City Airport were also canceled between 06.00 a.m. and 09.30 a.m. Friday, causing further knock-on delays throughout the day.

Rivers, including the Towy in Wales, burst their banks and homes were left without power as the west of Britain was lashed with rainfall, with parts of south-Wales severely affected, with images showing towns partially submerged across the region.

In a statement, the NECG said Storm Callum had made its way across the country as forecast by Met Eireann with the worst of the storm affecting the west coast.

On Saturday, areas over high ground could see a further 50 to 80mm of rain.

As part of the preparations, flood prevention measures were taken in a number of coastal areas.
