On Saturday, his funeral procession will pause by the Vietnam Memorial and head for Washington National Cathedral for a formal service.

John McCain's procession has left the U.S. Capitol and is making its way to Washington National Cathedral, where former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama are among the speakers who will pay tribute to the late Arizona senator.

McCain's procession will come near the White House as it travels from the Capitol to the cathedral.

A private service will take place at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday, and McCain will be laid to rest in the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery.

The President's daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner are both attending the ceremony.

"John's voice will always come as a whisper over our shoulder - we are better than this, America is better than this", Bush said, adding: "We will remember him as he was: unwavering, undimmed, unequaled". Following after Bush, Obama said John McCain "made us better presidents".

McCain, who died at the age of 81 last Saturday after a lengthy battle with brain cancer, was an iconic figure in USA politics.

An outpouring of love and memories flooded in immediately following his passing and the decorated Vietnam War veteran was later honored in Arizona on Wednesday, the day he would've turned 82.

McCain denounced him for using language that "fired up the crazies", while Trump said McCain was a "dummy" who had barely managed to graduate from the US Naval Academy. But it was his military service, punctuated by years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, that molded McCain's political life. He refused to be released without his men.

Saturday's service is the last for McCain in Washington. Conspicuously absent was Republican President Donald Trump.
