Trump Says He Wants To Hear From Kavanaugh's Accuser

Kavanaugh has denied the accusation.

The Senate is narrowly controlled by Republicans, who have embraced the idea of a quick vote on Kavanaugh's nomination if Ford does not to testify. As Senator Hatch noted in 1991 when the FBI conducted an investigation into Anita Hill's allegations: "When they heard about this the first time, they immediately ordered the FBI investigation, which was the very right thing to do". At one point, Ford said that Kavanaugh placed his hand over her mouth to keep her from making any noises.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees Supreme Court nominations, has scheduled a hearing for Monday and invited both Ford and Kavanaugh to testify.

Pollster Frank Luntz said Wednesday that Democrats brought in Ms. Hill for a series of media appearances because "they realized within 24 hours that this story was turning - that people were starting to wonder, 'Why is she backing off?'" Only if the White House "demands it" will the FBI investigate the claim, Carlson said.

"It is not the FBI's role to investigate a matter such as this", wrote Grassley, who also sent a letter to committee Democrats formally rejecting their bid for the FBI to investigate. Susan Collins (R-Maine) wrote to the Judiciary Committee's chairman and ranking Democrat to suggest a courtroom-style examination of Ford and Kavanaugh by attorneys, in addition to questioning by committee members.

After initially saying through a lawyer on Monday that she was willing to appear, Ms Ford has since said she first wants a full FBI investigation of her accusation. "He remains committed to providing a fair forum for both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh".

"The rush to a hearing is unnecessary, and contrary to the committee discovering the truth", Banks said.

According to the Washington Post, Ford, who had also contacted the newspaper in July, made a decision to go public after it became clear people were learning her identity. Feinstein chose not to make the letter public because Ford wanted her identity kept confidential, and Feinstein has said that was her priority. The president also called the treatment of Kavanaugh "very unfair" and said that his nominee is "such an outstanding man, it's very hard for me to imagine anything happened". "If she shows up that would be wonderful, if she doesn't show up that would be unfortunate". "She's not asking for extraordinary measures, she's asking for basic fairness". Republicans were reportedly encouraged by that move, according to Politico.

"As you are aware, she has been receiving death threats, which have been reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and she and her family have been forced out of their home". Hirono said the threats constitute being labeled as "intimidation of a witness".

The timetable brought cries of protest from Democrats, who have called on the FBI to investigate the allegations made by Christine Blasey Ford, a professor from California, and to expand the number of witnesses who would be called beyond Ford and Kavanaugh.

Ford's demand has been fully backed by Democrats.

"Privately, Trump is being cautioned extensively to stay out of the fight over Kavanaugh, according to two White House advisers, and so far has tempered his language".

President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh to the bench. She accused Kavanaugh of attacking her and trying to remove her clothing while he was drunk at a party when he was 17 years old and she was 15.

Palo Alto University issued a statement supporting Ford. It was not immediately clear how Republicans would respond to Ford's request to testify later in the week.

In a letter to Ford's attorneys released Wednesday, Grassley said "no one should be subject to that behavior".
