Tropical Storm brings hurricane watch to US Gulf Coast

Positioned 145 miles east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, Gordon is moving toward the northwest at 15 mph.

"Gordon will not be just a coastal event, and not just wind but also water could be damaging, unsafe and even deadly, especially if preparations are not rushed to completion as early as possible today before tropical storm conditions arrive", said Rick Knabb, The Weather Channel's tropical weather expert. In addition to Gordon, Tropical Storm Florence is hovering over the eastern Atlantic but is not expected to make landfall.

Sustained winds of tropical-storm-force are likely in the zone under a hurricane warning, with the possibility of hurricane-force gusts, over 74 miles per hour. Red flags flew over Pensacola-area beaches in Florida's Panhandle, where swimming and wading in the Gulf of Mexico was prohibited.

Heavy flooding rainfall of two to six inches will be possible across all of South Mississippi.

The National Weather Service expects Gordon to gain strength once it enters the Gulf of Mexico, may reach near-hurricane level force; Garrett Tenney reports.

At least 300 people were displaced in Riley County, Kansas, after the area was struck by heavy rain and significant flooding.

The hurricane warning was placed into effect for the area stretching from the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border. Storm surge is also a concern for the Alabama beaches especially.

A storm surge warning has been issued from Shell Beach, LA, to the Mississippi-Alabama border.
