Sessions was also an early supporter of Trump but the president has attacked him repeatedly for his decision in March 2017 to recuse himself from oversight of the investigation into Russian election interference and links between Trump aides and Moscow. The two men were Trump's earliest supporters in Congress, and the indictments are fodder for Democrats heading into November 6 elections that may give them control of the House.

US President Donald Trump has escalated his attacks on Attorney-General Jeff Sessions, suggesting the Department of Justice put Republicans in mid-term jeopardy with recent indictments of two Republican congressmen.

Trump's complaint came weeks after Collins, the first member of Congress to endorse his presidential run in 2015, was indicted on charges of insider trading.

Trump, who did not address the specifics of the charges, did not name the Republicans.

He praised China for its "remarkable economic achievements" including that it lifted millions of its people out of poverty. The initiatives include infrastructure connectivity, green development, and health care, as well as peace and security.

Of course, Toobin's hypothetical is a totally different situation, mainly since Trump wasn't recommending that Sessions or anyone else in the Justice Department cease what they're now doing. Immediately he became a wonderful man, a saint like figure in fact.

Trump recently told Bloomberg News that he would keep Sessions as attorney general until after the midterm elections.

The justice department has not commented on the tweet.

"The Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now", Trump quipped.

Journalist John Nichols pointed out that Trump's flagrant attempt to use his authority to favor his own political party in an upcoming election by directing federal prosecutors to ignore two congressmen's allegations of criminal conduct, amounts to the definition of an impeachable offense.

Mr Session said he "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations" in August, hours after Mr Trump had critcised him in a interview on Fox News. He was also under investigation by congressional ethics officials. The comment on Monday was the latest indication that Trump, who ran on a pledge to "drain the swamp", believes his political allies should be immune from prosecution, regardless of the evidence stacked against them.

Both lawmakers have pleaded not guilty. "Really sick!" he wrote.

Despite Trump's claim that both investigations began under Democratic President Barack Obama, Collins was charged over trades in June 2017 - almost six months after Trump took office.
