President Donald Trump is escalating his attacks on Attorney General Jeff Sessions, suggesting the embattled official should have intervened in investigations of two GOP congressmen to help Republicans in the midterms.

Trump is accusing Sessions of putting Republican control of the House of Representatives in jeopardy by announcing those charges just two months before the election.

The two first Republicans to endorse Trump in the Republican presidential primaries were indicted on separate charges - Rep. Duncan Hunter of California for spending campaign funds for personal expenses and Rep. Chris Collins of NY on insider trading.

U.S. Attorney-General Jeff Sessions convened the meeting, set for September 25, "to discuss a growing concern that these companies may be hurting competition and intentionally stifling the free exchange of ideas on their platforms", Justice Department spokesman Devin O'Malley said.

"The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice - one for the majority party and one for the minority party", the Republican senator said. However, Trump has been at odds with Sessions after the lawmaker recused himself from the Russia investigation after it was revealed that he did not disclose to Senators that he held meetings with a Russian ambassador during Trump's election campaign.

Khan also briefed the attending journalists on his recent meeting with National Accountability Bureau Chairman Javed Iqbal. The prime minister's office says it's Khan's first meeting with a foreign dignitary since he was sworn in on August 18th.

The Justice Department raised the prospect of a possible investigation as Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey concluded their testimony today before the Senate Intelligence Committee, where they addressed efforts to prevent foreign abuse of their platforms.

Although presidents and attorney generals have clashed in previous administrations, experts see Trump as breaking new ground in terms of the public and aggressive ways he pressures Sessions. "I think [Trump's] was a comment not created to obstruct justice but in my view, not appropriate".

Trump's tweet drew a scolding Monday from Sen.

In a second tweet, Trump said Democrats "must love" Sessions and likened the situation to Democrats support for former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired past year.

Still, Mr Sessions has made clear to associates that he has no intention of leaving his job voluntarily despite Mr Trump's constant criticism.

Woodward also reportedly wrote that Trump, mimicking Sessions' Southern accent, called his attorney general "mentally retarded" and said that Sessions "couldn't even be a one-person country lawyer down in Alabama".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said the tweet indicated Trump and Sessions "do not have a healthy relationship".

But the key objection lies to Trump's tweet lies in the president's call for the corruption of law enforcement. Trump replied, "I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department".

Republican congressional leadership considered the charges serious enough to move to strip both men of their committee assignments.

"Politics must play no role in the decisions of federal investigators or prosecutors regarding any investigations or criminal charges". "I think Sessions is a very smart man and a man of integrity".
