As of 5 P.M. Wednesday, the "storm of a lifetime" continued to make its way toward the Carolina coast, with max winds of up to 120 miles per hour. Isaac is forecast to gradually weaken over the next few days, and could degenerate into a tropical wave during that time.

In its latest advisory, the US Hurricane Center placed Helene about 760 miles off the Azores and calculated the maximum sustained wind speed at 65mph. The storm, which just days earlier had been a hurricane, weakened significantly as it approached the the Lesser Antilles and passed with little notice in the USVI, stirring some winds and bringing some hit-or-miss showers to the territory but little else.

"Isaac has become less organized and is now a weak Tropical Storm".

Top winds were holding at 90 miles per hour - that's just a Category 1 hurricane - but some communities were already submerged in more than six feet of water as the storm drenched the coast. "Storm surge is the main cause of the death and destruction associated with hurricanes", NBC News explained after Hurricane Ike hit Texas.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Andy Page said: "There remains large uncertainty in the exact route Storm Helene will take, however, a spell of very strong winds is expected, initially for parts of south-west England and west Wales, then later south-west Scotland and the southeast of Northern Ireland".

Meanwhile, the projections for rain are growing, adding to growing concerns about flooding across the two states: Coastal North Carolina now expects 20-30 inches, with isolated areas of 40 inches projected in SC.

Storm surge is also expected to produce "life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, during the next 36 hours in the indicated locations", says the National Hurricane Center.
