President Trump to visit Cherry Point as part of Florence tour

President Trump took time to speak with homeowners in New Bern, North Carolina where Hurricane Florence brought devastating floods.

Towns and cities across the state were filling thousands of sandbags, finalizing evacuation plans and organizing rescue crews as they nervously watched swollen rivers rise near or beyond their flood stages, a week after Florence dumped some three feet of rain on the region. Risky flooding and evacuations may begin early next week, officials said. "Please heed the warnings", Sheriff Lane Cribb said.

White and Lloyd, who live in the North Carolina town of Kelly, were given little time Thursday night to evacuate when the Cape Fear River came rushing onto their property.

Roads have been so impassable in Kinston, North Carolina, the National Guard has used helicopters to distribute water. About 10,000 people remained in shelters.

Roads also were a major problem in Wilmington, a city of 120,000 people still mostly cut off from the rest of North Carolina.

Flooding from the Cape Fear River caused breaches in a dam at a cooling lake at Duke Energy's LV Sutton Plant in Wilmington, North Carolina, prompting the company to shut down the natural gas plant Friday, Duke Energy said in a statement.

Duke also said it can not rule out the possibility that coal ash from another plant is flowing into nearby waters.
