Meteorologists watching Hurricane Florence closely, with potential for East Coast landfall

The hurricane - now teetering between Category 2 and Category 3 status - gained some momentum in the Atlantic on Wednesday night, reaching wind speeds above 130 mph, making it a Category 4, if only for a few hours. Formation chance in 48 hours was at 10 percent, and formation chance over the next five days was 50 percent. Forecast models have been inconsistent in determining the future path of Florence, but it's growing more likely to bring significant impacts to the east coast by mid to late next week.

The second storm is now a tropical wave off the west coast of Africa that in its early stages is far more advanced than either Florence or Disturbance 1.

But the first day of school is expected to go as scheduled on Monday — and all public services are “currently operating as normal, inclusive of public transportation and government offices”, a spokeswoman said.

There is more tropical activity beyond Florence, so it's not a bad idea to think about this anyway. It is not yet known if Florence will make landfall.

The risk of impact on the U.S. East Coast from Florence next week has increased, the Miami-based weather forecaster added.

"The models are. really starting to favor a landfall around the Carolinas", though states to the north should watch as well, CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar said Saturday morning.

While no warnings have been issued for Hurricane Florence, mapping by the U.S. National Hurricane Center showed the system approaching Bermuda.

But the unusually strong high pressure system that is predicted to park itself north of the storm seems like it has the potential to push Florence on an unprecedented and potentially perilous course.

The Hurricane Center is predicting that Florence will generate swells that will affect Bermuda by Friday and the U.S. East Coast by the weekend.

Now is the time to beginning thinking about hurricane preparedness if you live along or near the coast.

The state emergency office recommends that kits have enough supplies for every person in your household for three to seven days. The next two named storms would be Helene and Isaac.
