Djokovic claimed his third US Open title on Sunday with a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 triumph over Del Potro, taking him level with Pete Sampras's mark of 14 grand slams.

Newly-crowned US Open champions Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka have jumped up in the recent tennis rankings.

Aged just 20, Del Potro defeated Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in successive matches to win the 2009 US Open, and the world No 3 was determined to stay competitive, staying firm following a gritty hold in the opening game of the next set.

After taking just two points off Del Potro's first three service games, Djokovic, in his eighth final in NY and 23rd at the majors, pounced to break for 5-3.

When he led 3-1 in the second, Djokovic appeared to be cruising to a 15th win in 19 attempts against del Potro.

But Mr Mamba said: "I'm stressing that this one is very different, this is more complicated because of possible storm surges". In the province of Benguet and Kalinga, at least 136 people have been evacuated, according to the civil defence office.

Novak Djokovic's U.S. Open title has moved him up three spots to No. 3 in the ATP rankings, behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, making the Big 3 the top three for the first time in 3½ years. But Djokovic was in no mood to hang around, winning the last three games to clinch the crown.

This is Djokovic's second straight Grand Slam singles title this season following Wimbledon 2018 and a 14th overall to tie American Pete Sampras for third all-time.

This time Djokovic is No.3 behind Nadal and Federer, but the stunning three-year first will have tennis fans asking if it really is 2018. There has been a first-time victor in four of the past six Grand Slam tournaments, and 20-year-old Naomi Osaka added to the eclectic mix by becoming the first Japanese to win a Major.

Sloane Stephens, who won last year's U.S. Open and lost in the quarterfinals last week, dropped from No. 3 to No. 9. Barty and Vandeweghe kissed the trophy and won $700,000 for their championship.

"When I had the surgery on my elbow I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through". "To be honest, I was crying till now", Del Potro said as he began his post-match press conference. Actually, today I am. He was earmarked as the next big force, the man alongside Djokovic to rattle the two great champions he had just felled to break through. Here's a look at those who expressed congratulations to Djokovic.

Despite defeat, world number three Del Potro remained proud after an achievement he never thought would have been possible during his injury hell.

"When you have chances against the top guys and can't make it, they take advantage", said del Potro, who hit 47 unforced errors and 31 winners. 1 and 2, respectively, while Germany's Angelique Kerber climbed one place to 3.

In the tiebreak, Del Potro looked susceptible to forehand errors and Djokovic showed vast courage and quality to take it away from Del Potro, going up 2-0 in the final. Of course I'm sad to lose but I'm happy for Novak as well.
