Following the PM's declaration that he would not be a candidate if the meeting passed a spill motion, Scott Morrison, the party's treasurer, and Julie Bishop, who served as both foreign minister and deputy Liberal leader, declared that they would be candidates if that happened.

The Labor leader has also wasted no time in labelling new Prime Minister Scott Morrison as "the architect, the author and the creator" of bad policies.

The National Public Radio, in its website, reported that, "Turnbull faced opposition from conservative members of his party over low poll numbers as the country approaches a general election in May 2019". The challenge had been instigated by home affairs minister Peter Dutton, whom Morrison defeated in a secret ballot.

"I don't want to dwell on the shocking and shameful events of the last week, a pointless week of madness that disgraced our parliament and appalled our nation", he allegedly said, before thanking his loyal supporters.

Dutton tried again after the resignations and it turned into a three-way contest with Dutton, Morrison and Bishop.

He has inherited leadership of a coalition between the Liberal and National parties whose one-seat majority will have to be defended when a by-election is held for a safe Sydney seat that Turnbull is set to vacate.
