One person has died, and a total of eight human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) have now been confirmed across MI.

In June, DHEC's Bureau of Environmental Health Services issued an updated manual with recommendations for mosquito control activities in response to West Nile. Since the beginning of 2018, four cases of EEEV infection in horses in Nassau County and one outbreak of EEEV in emus were reported.

Although the risk of infection from handling birds is very low, the health authority warns that wild birds should not be handled using bare hands. If you are outdoors at any time and notice mosquitoes around you, take steps to avoid being bitten by moving indoors, covering up and/or wearing repellant.

The centre for disease control says most people who get infected will show no symptoms, but the disease can be serious for one of about every 150 who are infected. Mosquitoes lay their larvae in standing water. Keep them outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors. Apply insect repellent to clothing to help prevent bites. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. "Some steps you can take include using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents, wearing light-colored long-sleeved shirts and trousers when outside and using mosquito netting to protect infants in carriages, strollers and playpens".
