Qatar pledges $15 billion to invest in Turkey

President Trump is ramping his attacks up on Turkey, claiming the country has taken advantage of the USA for many years.

The Turkish lira continued to retreat from its historic low against the dollar on Thursday after Qatar announced a $15 billion funding package for Turkey's wobbling economy.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said additional US sanctions are ready if Turkey refuses to release an American pastor whom the Trump administration says is illegally detained.

Referring to imprisoned pastor Andrew Brunson, Trump said "they have a great Christian pastor there, he's a very innocent man".

A Trump administration official told the Associated Press Thursday that National Security Adviser John Bolton spoke Monday with the Turkish ambassador to the US telling him to release Brunson. The United States was the fourth-largest source of imports to Turkey past year, accounting for $12 billion of imports, according to International Monetary Fund statistics.

In his latest tweets, Trump blamed local politicians for the estimated $92 million price tag for the parade, so he's scrapping it. Trump first publicly spoke about his desire for a military parade as president-elect, saying he wanted to show off the military.

Almost 10 million people use US' iPhones in Turkey, press reports said, adding that the amount paid for the products hit $7 billion in 10 years.

"We've already responded based on the World Trade Organisation rules and will continue to do so", Mr Pekcan was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

He also appeared to acknowledge that he was disappointed that Turkey did not release Brunson after the United States helped negotiate the release of a Turkish national being held in Israel.

Speaking to reporters in the White House press briefing room, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders reiterated that the Trump administration plans to keep applying pressure.

In return, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree to raise tariffs on American imports including cars, alcohol and tobacco.

"Despite everything, we are ready to talk about everything to solve the existing problems as equal partners", Causoglu said.

Qatar pledged $15 billion of investment in Turkey on Wednesday that a government source in Ankara said would be channeled into its banks and financial markets.

The lira lost strength after Mnuchin's remarks.
