The official accused the pope of having known of allegations of sex abuse by a prominent USA cardinal for years.

Responding to Viganò's 11-page letter alleging that Pope Francis lifted sanctions that had been imposed on McCarrick by Pope Benedict, DiNardo did not take the Catholic Left's line of characterizing the Archbishop as a right-wing conspiracy theorist; instead, the prelate openly called for an investigation to uncover the truth.

But he claims he was surprised to find McCarrick back on Church missions after Francis became pope in 2013, although the claim that Benedict sanctioned him is disputed.

The document, published by the National Catholic Register, is attributed to Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano - who served as apostolic nuncio in Washington from 2011 to 2016 and is known for being at ideological odds with Pope Francis.

He said the pope "knew from at least June 23, 2013, that McCarrick was a serial predator", adding that "he knew that he was a corrupt man, he covered for him to the bitter end".

"Pope Francis has repeatedly asked for total transparency in the Church", Vigano added.

USA cardinals defended themselves Monday against accusations of a Catholic Church cover-up on sex abuse detailed by a conservative bishop who has called on Pope Francis to resign.

"I read the statement this morning, and I must tell you sincerely that, I must say this, to you and all those who are interested: Read the statement carefully and make your own judgment", the Pope answered.

Among other things, McCarrick has been accused of sexual abuse of seminarians and priests when he was a bishop in New Jersey. It was the first resignation of a Cardinal in connection with sex abuse claims.

He was one of the highest-ranking church officials accused of sex abuse in a scandal that has hit the 1.2 billion-member faith since reports of priests abusing children and bishops covering for them were first reported by the Boston Globe in 2002.

McCarrick, 88, resigned last month in disgrace and was stripped of his title after allegations that he had abused a minor almost 50 years ago and also forced adult male seminarians to share his bed.

But the bishop of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, told his parishioners he thinks the allegations are "credible".

Cardinal O'Malley has apologized for what he described as an administrative communication failure in which his secretary did not relay to him a 2015 letter from Father Ramsey about allegations against Archbishop McCarrick.

Some who turned out for him in the Irish village of Knock, where a group of locals in 1879 said they saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary, said Pope Francis should be given time to deal with the abuse issues that have rocked the church for decades.

Some Catholic scholars question the motives behind Vigano's inflammatory accusations, but also say the claims are deeply serious as scandal continues to wrack the Catholic Church.

The timing of the letter's release - right in the middle of Francis's landmark trip to Ireland - has raised speculation of a campaign against the Argentinian pontiff by conservatives in the Church.

He said on Saturday that the corruption and cover-up of abuse amounted to human excrement, according to victims.
