Man kills alleged intruder, then police arrived and killed him

Officers responding to a home invasion in Colorado reportedly gunned down the homeowner - moments after he reportedly fatally shot the intruder.

At about 1:30 in the morning there were multiple 911 calls about a disturbance near North Iola Street and East Montview Boulevard.

The release said officers "arrived to a very chaotic and violent scene" and heard gunshots inside the home.

The officer who shot the homeowner is now administrative reassignment with pay, according to police.

He said evidence at the scene suggests that the officer who shot Black was outside the home when he opened fire, but he's eager to see body camera footage to determine exactly what happened.

The man was shot and taken to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.

A second man, the suspected intruder, was found dead during a search of the home.

A child also suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries at the hands of the intruder, but police did not release additional details, citing an ongoing investigation. They encountered an armed man when they entered, and one of the officers fatally shot him.

"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved", the news release from the Aurora Police Department reads. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time".

The police department voice mail ends with an appeal: "Thank you for calling the city of Aurora, the safest large city in Colorado". Neighbors told reporters that the man killed by police was a long-time resident of the neighborhood, a grandfather, and a retiree.

The investigation into the shooting will be conducted by the Aurora Police Major Crimes Unit, the Denver Police Department and the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office. As explained, under the 1985 Homeowners Protection Act, a shooting is justifiable if a homeowner believes that an intruder has intention to cause bodily harm or death against the homeowner or someone else inside of the residence.
