Airstrikes on Yemeni hospital and market kill at least 55

On Thursday, the UN's special envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths said he plans to invite the country's warring factions to hold talks in the Swiss city of Geneva on September 6.

The airstrikes were close to the city's main public hospital, al-Thawra, and near a popular fish market, said the medical officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Mr Salama said the main hospital building remained intact but many subsidiary departments, especially the statistical department, were hit, affecting workers preparing for the cholera campaign.

There was no immediate comment from the Saudi-led coalition.

The announcement comes less than a week after Saudi Arabia temporarily suspended all oil shipments through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the southern entrance to the Red Sea.

Heavy fighting in Yemen's port province of Hodeida between pro-government forces and Shiite rebels has killed at least 80 people on both sides over the last two days, Yemeni officials and witnesses said Sunday.

He was referring to the Saudi-led coalition that has intervened in Yemen since 2015 to restore the internationally recognized government to power, which has been driven out of the capital Sanaa by the rebels.
