Trump said if May went ahead with the "soft Brexit" plan outlined last Friday - that led to the resignations of Johnson and Brexit secretary David Davis - it will "kill" any prospect of a US-UK trade deal. Both leaders said they had a lot to talk about.

"I think he has not been hospitable to a government that is very important". As he said in his interview with The Sun she "is a very good person" and he 'never said anything bad about her.'.

Despite Trump's criticism - which pounded the front pages of almost every British tabloid - he and May are still scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting, working lunch and joint news conference on Friday.

Trump accused the prime minister of ignoring his advice on Brexit negotiations, in remarks that echoed Johnson's private barbs that the U.S. president would do a better job than May in negotiations.

The UK administration, he said, has a "remarkable ability to play the ball and not the man so they will talk about the ways in which the (Brexit) deal the Prime Minister is proposing could allow for a free trade arrangement with the U.S.".

He showered praise on the PM, describing her as an "incredible" leader who was "doing a fantastic job", adding that he had apologised for comments made to The Sun.

Mr Thomson said: "If we do not make changes to what is being put before us then we are, to be quite frank with you, screwed going forward to a general election".

President Trump also told The Sun London Mayor Khan has "done a very bad job on terrorism" by allowing so many migrants to come to the city.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan speaks at a vigil in Potters Fields Park in London on June 5, 2017 to commemorate the victims of the terror attack on London Bridge and at Borough Market that killed seven people on June 3.

On Brexit, he said: "I don't know what you're going to do, but whatever you do, it's OK with me ... just as long as we can trade together".

Mr Trump added: "I have a great relationship with Angela Merkel".

"If you look, she probably went the opposite way".

Trump visit brings biggest police operation since UK riots
The president is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth during his visit. In reality Trump's visit is set to go ahead and no announcement about a cancellation has been made this time .

Trump told The Sun newspaper in an interview published Thursday that he is the descendant of immigrants from Germany and Scotland.

In this interview, Mr Trump said: "You have a mayor who has done a awful job in London".

The interview, published during a gala dinner May hosted for Trump at Blenheim Palace, appeared to further ratchet up tensions in a relationship that's been fraught since the president assumed office.

Hundreds gathered under a large balloon depicting Trump as an angry baby while others shouted and held signs aspiring to show the president he wasn't welcome.

It was one of more than a hundred protests police expected during Trump's four-day trip.

As the Trumps dined with the Mays, protests in the British capital took place outside Winfield House, the residence of US Ambassador Woody Johnson. He obviously likes me, and says very good things about me.
