U.S. lawmakers blast Trump over Putin summit

Trump sought on Tuesday to calm the storm over what critics said was his failure to hold Putin accountable for what U.S. intelligence agencies said was meddling in the 2016 election, saying he misspoke in the joint news conference in Helsinki.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held their first full-fledged meeting in Finland on Monday.

The criticism comes after President Trump sided with Putin in a meeting.

"Russia is a menacing government that does not share our interests and it does not share our values", he said.

Congressman Adam Schiff, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Trump had given Putin "a green light to interfere in 2018".

Former CIA Director Thomas Brennan called Trump's "nothing short of treasonous".

After a one-on-one meeting during which Trump and Putin met privately with only their translators present and a working lunch, the two leaders reemerged to take questions from the press.

But the Kremlin didn't expect one meeting to bring an end to Western sanctions and a pullback of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces deployed near Russia's borders.
