Trump club seeks to hire 61 foreign cooks, waiters

Despite his rhetoric that immigration hurts American workers, President Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club is seeking to hire 61 foreign workers for the 2018 winter season, according to the Labor Department.

Trump's Palm Beach business filed requests with the U.S. Labor Department for additional visas for foreign servers and cooks, according to records submitted Thursday and Friday.

Trump defended the practice of hiring foreign workers, telling MSNBC's "Morning Joe" it "is very hard to get people in Florida for seasonal jobs".

Trump has hired 240 foreign workers at Mar-a-Lago since he announced his candidacy for president in June 2015, according to BuzzFeed, which first reported the news.

The H-2B visas are for temporary non-agricultural workers and employers requesting these must prove that there are not enough workers in the U.S. who are "able, willing, qualified, and available to do the temporary work".

The club is hiring 40 waiters and waitresses and 21 cooks to work the busy season from October 1 to May 31.

The Mar-a-Lago Club has repeatedly used foreign workers in the past.

Trump has been criticized for his hiring practices by Floridians who claim they want to work and have been turned down for Mar-a-Lago jobs for no apparent reason.

The newspaper reported almost 300 USA workers had applied or been referred for jobs as waiters, waitresses, cooks and housekeepers but only 17 were hired.

Trump's competitors have said the seasonal nature of resort work - which picks up in the fall and drops off in the spring when wealthy snowbirds leave Palm Beach - is not attractive to American workers. And the Trump Winery near Charlottesville sought to employ 23 foreigners.
