Participating in the debate on no-confidence motion against the NDA government, first since it came to power in 2014, Mr Gandhi's 40-minute speech was disrupted a number of times by noisy protests from treasury benches, a brief adjournment and a dramatic scene when he walked across to shake hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hug him.

When asked about how was the prime minister's speech while he was coming out out of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi said it was "weak".

Modi, whose BJP is setting up next year's vote as a presidential-style contest between the experienced prime minister and an untested challenger, is himself known for his bear hugs, embracing leaders such as U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Another Congress leader Rachit Seth, sharing a short clip of Gandhi giving Modi an unexpected hug, said, "This 5 second video will haunt the BJP for posterity!"

"This is the truth, and he told me that I have no objection to it (details of Rafale deal) being made public, you can tell it to entire India", he said. "I can not dare to see eye-to-eye with you", he told the Congress chief on his remark that he can not look in the Congress leader's eyes. He said the party moved no-confidence motion were once with the NDA. "Hug crushes 56-inch chest that responds with anger and hate", the daily said.

Taking the treasury benches by surprise and startling the PM for a moment, Rahul walked over and hugged Modi. In a statement, the French government said: "When a deal is very sensitive, we can't reveal all details".

Picking up the Rafale deal, Rahul used the opportunity to attack PM Modi, alleging that since some "corporate" had a vested interest in the ruling government, the PM went to France and "magically" the cost per aircraft increased.

Speaking during the no-confidence motion, Modi said only the 125 crore people of the country can decide who would sit in the Prime Minister's chair or who can be unseated.

He said, "those who don't have confidence in themselves, can not trust anyone". You hate me, I maybe "Pappu" for you.

"Had it not been your arrogance, and had you understood the problems of the states, GST would have been implemented five years ago", he added. "Any instance of violence brings shame to the nation".

Modi said that the opposition knew that it didn't have enough support to defeat his government.
