Trump reiterated in an interview broadcast Sunday that he thinks Kim is serious about denuclearization.

Last weekend, a U.S. delegation met with Kim Jong-un's officials at the North and South Korean border, to discuss their next steps towards implementing the denuclearisation treaty signed by North Korea and the USA at the June 12 summit in Singapore.

Kim also led the US team hammering out the joint declaration that Trump and Kim Jong Un signed in Singapore, and it's expected his team is working now to negotiate how it is implemented.

The State Department says a senior US diplomat held talks with North Korea in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas over the weekend.

She was referring to U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton's recent comments that he expected Pompeo to discuss a one-year plan for the dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic programs.

Pompeo's visit comes days after the first in-person meeting between the US and North Korea over the weekend.

The country's top diplomat is likely to meet with North Korean leader Kim to discuss in detail the denuclearization process, especially with what the North can do next.

White House officials are reportedly looking to schedule a second meeting between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump in New York City this September, in an attempt to progress from the two leaders' first summit in Singapore.
