An Illinois police officer being investigated for his inaction as an intoxicated man berated a woman wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag has resigned, the Forest Preserves of Cook County said Wednesday.

Trybus was later arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

"The 10-year veteran officer resigned late Wednesday, according to Cook County Forest Preserve District officials, rather than fight to keep his badge over the encounter that has been recorded and viewed millions of times, drawing global scorn for Connor's inaction", the outlet reported.

During the encounter, 24-year-old Mia Irizarry was aggressively questioned about her citizenship by Trybus, who cops eventually said was drunk at the time.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America", the man can be heard saying to her on a video she posted on Facebook.

He added: "The United States of America is a nation that was built and thrives on diversity". Irizarry can be heard asking a park police officer for help, and telling him she is uncomfortable. She said she was thankful officials recognized the behavior of the officer was wrong. Forest preserve officials said Officer Patrick Connor resigned late Wednesday. "He basically got in my face, damn near nearly touched me", Irizarry is heard saying to the camera during the incident.

The Facebook Live video, filmed by Mia Irizarry, shows her being continually abused by a man later identified as 62-year-old Timothy G. Trybus at a picnic area in Cook County, Illinois. I do not feel comfortable with him here.

I was new and I was dressed somewhat casually because we were just returning from a Puerto Rican celebration and my daughter was carrying a Puerto Rican flag. If you were American, you wouldn't wear that.

A representative of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle's office declined comment about the charges. We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background.

The officer can then be seen talking to the man who gesticulates back and tells him to "shut the f*** up".

In an earlier statement, the police said that an investigation had been launched and the officer had been placed on desk duty.

Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia criticized the district for not acting more swiftly to discipline the officer.

Mr Trybus continued to harangue Ms Irizarry for about 10 minutes before other officers arrived and arrested him.

"You're not an American", Trybus tells Irizarry. She said the group politely complied but her Puerto Rico shirt appeared to act as a trigger to the man.

The female officer then speaks with Irizarry who gives her version of the incident and the officer explains that they were called to the area after a report that a man was choking a woman. She also spoke at a press conference, saying, "The incident in June is completely unacceptable. This is not the America we all believe in".
