The U.S. President Donald Trump on late Sunday warned his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani to not threaten his country "again".

Iran's president has warned Donald Trump against provoking the country, telling the U.S. leader that "war with Iran is the mother of all wars".

Pompeo did say the USA was willing to talk with Iran, as Trump has said in the past, but real change can only come with change in the regime's behavior: "We are willing to talk with the regime in Iran, but relief from American pressure will only come when we see tangible, demonstrated and sustained shifts in Tehran's policies", he said.

Rouhani also dismised the idea that the USA could stop Iran from exporting oil, according to Al Jazeera. In May, the USA left a deal which reduced Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of global sanctions.

"You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran's security and interests", Rouhani said.

But Rouhani also seemed to aim for peace.

"America is threatening the Iranian people with its sanctions and our government is doing the same with its incompetence and mismanagement", said the self-employed 35-year-old.

Mr Trump alleged that the deal did not restrict Iran's "destabilising activities" in the region enough, and could not detect or prevent any breaking of the terms of the deal.

"Our hope is that ultimately the regime will make meaningful changes in its behaviour both inside Iran and globally", he said.

In a speech late on Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced Iran's leaders as a "mafia" and promised unspecified backing for Iranians unhappy with their government.

Gen. Gholam Hossein Gheibparvar, the chief of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard's volunteer Basij force, also said on Monday that Trump "won't dare" take any military action against Iran.

With popular discontent over Iran's faltering economy and sliding currency, and the prospect of tough new US sanctions, Iran's leaders have called for unity. America wants nothing less than (to) destroy Iran.

In naming Iranian officials who have amassed fortunes while the people struggle, Pompeo cited "thieving thug" Sadeq Larijani, head of the Iranian Judiciary, who he said is now worth $300 million.

When a member of the audience asked him whether the Iranian people might gain control of their country in the foreseeable future, Pompeo replied swiftly, "Of course". North's Foreign Ministry accused the United States of making "gangster-like" demands for its unilateral disarmament.

"The United States under President Trump will not stay silent", he said. He assured them that the Trump administration shared their dreams for the people of Iran.
