In my opinion Portugal played better than Uruguay, we had some opportunities, but that is what football's about: "who scores more goals wins, so that is why Uruguay is to be congratulated".

The teams will face off at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday in Sochi, Russia, in the 2018 World Cup Round of 16.

Centre-back Pepe headed Portugal level in the second half before Edinson Cavani restored Uruguay's lead with his second of the game.

Uruguay will play France in their quarter-final on Friday.

Korea Sends Germany Home in World Cup
Having something to play for in this final group stage game fits right into this team's mentality, Hernandez said. KAZAN, Russia - Everyone was waiting for Germany to score another late World Cup-saving goal.

For now, it is back to the drawing board for Ronaldo and Portugal, as sights turn to the European Championships in two years' time, and possibly one last World Cup for Ronaldo in 2022.

The loss for Portugal against Uruguay ended the dream of legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, who alongside Argentina's Lionel Messi, may have to end a stellar global career without the biggest trophy in football.

Pepe pulled one back 10 minutes into the second half, outjumping the Uruguayan defense to head a corner from Raphael Guerreiro past keeper Fernando Muslera to make it 1-1. Messi's Argentina lost to France in the other game of the day.

And following his self-centred post-match interview after Real Madrid won the Champions League last month, fans may have expected something similar after being eliminated from the World Cup. It was two weeks ago that Ronaldo scored a hat trick in the same stadium against Spain, stroking his chin after the first goal to imply he was the "greatest of all time".

Germany has conceded goals in its past seven matches and has been vulnerable to counterattacks since the start of the tournament. South Korea lost its opening two matches but still entered the game with a chance to advance. "We believed until the end today".

Ronaldo was involved somewhat in Portugal's goal, even if he didn't come close to getting a touch on the cross.

Like Messi, Ronaldo has never scored in a knockout round match at the World Cup.

Earlier, Portugal coach Fernando Santos said he hoped Ronaldo would remain part of the worldwide set-up.

Tabarez said: 'When I walked out to the pitch I could hear our captain saying that we are playing for the father, the mother, the neighbour the brother and to give it your best.

"That is why I am saying that we will see how everything is". Muslera's long goal-kick was brought down by Bentancur 30 yards away, before the latter rolled a ideal pass towards the left where Cavani was unmarked.
