Beryl weakens to Tropical Storm

Beryl, which had been the Atlantic season's first hurricane, was losing power, but residents on islands stocked up on food and water and prepared for possible damaging winds, rains and waves.

Up to four inches of rain is expected in Puerto Rico, with tropical storm conditions including high winds and heavy rain likely to hit Guadeloupe and Dominica on Sunday night. The storm had been moving at 14 mph for most of Saturday, and tropical storm winds extend outward about 45 miles from its center.

The depression is stationary right now but is expected to slowly drift away from land to the east and strength becoming Tropical Storm Chris later tonight or early Sunday morning. A west- northwestward motion with some increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days.

Later Monday the storm is expected to head south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, whipping the island with minimal tropical storm-force winds as it continues to weaken. However, the center warned that those in the Lesser Antilles should keep an eye on its development.

Tropical Storm Beryl is gradually weakening and is forecast to degenerate into a trough of low pressure as it moves across the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday.

It said additional intensification could occur by the end of the forecast period when the cyclone moves northeastward away from the U.S. coast and interacts with a mid-level trough.

That storm was centered about 160 miles (260 kilometers) south of Cape Hatteras late Saturday, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph).
