Amazon's Prime Day runs into early snags

Amazon didn't release sales figures for the event, but it did say that this year's Prime Day sales surpassed those on last year's Cyber Monday and Black Friday and Prime Day.

Trouble on the site spiked just as the event began at 3 p.m.

Individual product pages appeared to not be affected and were still functional, though there were still issues involving adding items to carts for purchase.

Amazon's website has been up and down since the start of Prime Day in the United States at 3 p.m. Eastern.

Amazon created Prime Day in 2015 to mark its 20th anniversary, and its success has inspired other e-commerce companies to invent shopping holidays.

This year Amazon's desktop and mobile websites both experienced major glitches on Monday, making it hard for customers to make purchases and sparking a social media storm in response.

Although this may seem like a pretty big issue for Amazon to tangle with on one of its biggest sales days of the year, the company doesn't seem anxious. Whether it's a paper shredder, a dog crate, or a medicine ball, Amazon Prime members get 20 percent off the items in the basics section. The company now has over 100 million paid Prime members, almost double the number from 2016 and 20 million more than the 2017 estimates.
