Wild animals that escaped German zoo have been found

The police on Friday caught several large animals, including lions, tigers, a jaguar after they escaped from a zoo in the Eifel mountain range in western Germany on Friday.

The cats were all located within a few hours on the grounds of the zoo in Luenebach, located near the border with Luxembourg and Belgium, police spokesman Joerg Raskopp said.

The animals are said to have escaped when when a storm hit the area and caused floods.

Authorities said that the mass breakout could have been caused after a river overflowed following heavy rainfall causing fences at the zoo to erode. A massive hunt is under way for the five big cats.

Numerous police, zookeepers, and firefighters are combing the zoo looking for the animals before they wandered into the town. At the zoo, which is located on a riverbank, the water was knee-high.

One woman tweeted: "An innocent animal shot because the zoo clearly couldn't keep the animals safely in captivity".

According to the zoo's website, it is owned by the Wallpott family and has three permanent employees.

Friday's escape came two years after a similar case in eastern Germany, when two lions broke out of their cages at the Leipzig zoo.
