Luis Suarez made history for Uruguay as he inspired his country to a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their World Cup Group A clash.

Luis Suárez opened the scoring from close range after 23 minutes.

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia will face off with Uruguay, who are hoping to appease some worries after only beating Egypt 1-0 thanks to a late goal.

17 killed in stampede after brawl at crowded Caracas club
Relatives of those inside the club said the party was a celebration for the graduating class of several different high schools. Eight of those people who died were under the age of 18-years-old and another five people remain injured, according to Reverol.

The result had a number of repercussions for all teams in Group A as hosts Russian Federation will join the South Americans in the round of 16 while Egypt are eliminated along with the Saudis with a game still to play.

With this result, Saudi Arabia are without a win in twelve FIFA World Cup matches and in danger of finishing bottom of their group, as they have in all three previous appearances. The South Americans instantly had more strength and power down the flanks and created a string of chances before defender Jose Gimenez rose to head in an arching cross from a free kick from Sanchez to snatch all three points.

At least Suarez, who missed three sitters in Uruguay's 1-0 opening win against Egypt, was his vintage efficient self with his 52nd worldwide goal although he will not have dismissed fears he was not 100 percent fit.

With temperatures reaching 33 degrees Celsius, two-time world champions Uruguay and Saudi Arabia got off to a cautious start. Given Uruguay's superior talent level, manager Oscar Tabarez could opt to rotate his squad and prevent any key players from picking up any injuries.

"What we wanted was to win and move on to the next phase". They were more functional than exhilarating and reliant upon the threat carried by Barcelona's Suarez and strike partner Edinson Cavani. Even though they were defeated and are now out of the World Cup, they can at least take pride in their performance.
