Rising Kashmir editor Shujaat Bukhari killed in Srinagar

Bukhari, the editor of Rising Kashmir, a prominent English daily published from Srinagar, who had just come out of the office ahead of Iftar, was critically injured along with his two security officers.

His was an extremely hard job.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, but both claim it in its entirety. Mohammed Shaban Vakil, the editor of "Alsafa", was killed by Hizbul Muahideen militants in 1991. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people over the years.

"This has devastated the whole journalist fraternity in the region".

India has about 500,000 soldiers in the part of Kashmir it controls, where armed groups are fighting for independence or a merger with Pakistan. Recent weeks have also seen threats of violence against many journalists in different parts of the country. He frequently wrote for global publications including the BBC - being the voice that explained the complexities of the region to the rest of the world. As per latest report, Bukhari's PSo has also succumbed to injuries.

"This is why any resolution of the political situation in Kashmir must entail a commitment to end the cycles of violence and ensure accountability for past and current violations and abuses by all parties, and provide redress for victims", he said.

"Moderation does need courage", Ms Dutt said. He was a fearless and outspoken voice for justice and equality in Jammu and Kashmir.

But those close to him also remember him as a supportive colleague who would never "fail friends".

State police chief SP Vaid said that it was around 7.15 p.m., the Iftar time, that Bukhari came out of his office in Press Enclave and was boarding his vehicle when he was attacked by militants.

Mr Bhukari's journalism was admired - but he was always aware of the dangers of his chosen profession. In no time, the two others appeared and fired indiscriminately on the vehicle leading to the death of the senior journalist and the cops accompanying him. It is one of the most militarised zones in the world.
