As for the actual friendly, the final game before England's World Cup campaign, Gareth Southgate's charges beat Costa Rica 2-0 thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck.

England manager Gareth Southgate admitted Marcus Rashford had given him a hard decision to make ahead of the World Cup with a stunning strike in a 2-0 friendly victory over Costa Rica on Thursday (June 7).

Rashford scored with a handsome long-range shot to set England on their way to their second victory this week as they prepare for the Group G clash with Tunisia in Volgograd on June 18.

Gareth Southgate could not be happier with England's World Cup preparations given the kinship and qualities his group are displaying.

Hopefully it will be the 4-4-2 in a bar beat of Terrier Brass that will inspire England to success against Costa Rica and then the rest of the world in Russian Federation in the next month.

"You work on them in training so, when one comes off in a game, it's the reward you get", he told ITV when asked about his stunning goal. "We sometimes forget how old he is".

"I said to all the team before the game, I expect to see mistakes and, if I don't, there might be a problem because we wouldn't be being as attack-minded as we want to be".

"Going to the World Cup and playing a major part in my main aim", he added.

"We could go through 11 of those on the basis of what we saw tonight - and that's critical because we won't progress on 11 players chosen in the first game".

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a tremendous long-range strike into the top corner, beating Keylor Navas in goal for Costa Rica.

"A little bit different in that obviously (there was) a slightly different profile of players, so maybe we didn't get as many men in the box at times".

Southgate rang the changes after the hour mark as Dele Alli, Danny Welbeck, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope were introduced for the home side.
