The leaders discussed trade in their afternoon group meeting, touching on the World Trade Organization, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the steel and aluminum tariffs that Trump recently imposed on Canada and the European Union, the Canadian official said.

The EU has already said it will announce countermeasures against Trump's metals tariffs on July 1.

After leaving the summit Saturday, Trump announced that the US was pulling back its endorsement of the G7 communique in part because of what he called "false statements" at a news conference by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump cited unfair trade and tariffs from Canada, a longtime United States ally, as one of the reasons he refused to back the joint statement. He has directed US officials "not to endorse" the G-7 joint statement, and personally insulted Trudeau in a series of Twitter posts. He reiterated his longstanding view that the USA has been taken advantage of in global trade, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends".

Trump left Charlevoix before the G-7 summit had concluded in order to attend the bilateral summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. "International cooperation cannot depend on anger or small words".
