Kim summit: Twitter releases dedicated emoji to mark historic meet

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un were preparing for their historic summit in Singapore as both sides tried to narrow differences before the two leaders come face to face on Tuesday. U.S. officials were quoted as saying that the two leaders could spend the first two hours alone with translators but not advisors.

"Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!" he tweeted Monday. Attending the lunch with Trump were Pompeo, Bolton and White House chief of staff John Kelly.

The U.S.is hoping to leave the summit with a commitment from North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons but it is not yet clear what it would take for North Korea to agree to such an agreement.

Led by Sung Kim, a longtime State Department diplomat who now serves as the US ambassador to the Philippines, the USA team had held at least five sessions with the Pyongyang delegation over the past two weeks at the demilitarized zone in Korea.

Heavy security and armed police were in place at summit-related venues across the city-state.

"Wide-ranging and profound views on the issue of establishing new DPRK-U.S. relations, the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era, will be exchanged at the DPRK-U.S. summit talks", a dispatch by the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. North Korea and the United States will hold last minute working-level talks in Singapore on Monday, . a day before the historic summit between their two leaders.

North Korea has so far presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to his neighbors and to the United States as a logical next step following what Kim has claimed is the completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent to what Pyongyang has long claimed is a policy of hostility and "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

When a couple of guests were seen sneaking a photo, a North Korean official stormed up to them, demanding to check their phones.

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon its cherished nuclear weapons.

By prominently showing the Air China jet that flew Kim to Singapore, the reports also made no secret of China's important role behind the scenes.

Kim was the first to arrive in Singapore, landing at Changi airport on a commercial Air China plane, after intense speculation with the public tracking three separate aircraft leaving Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.

The BBC reported that Maxima canceled upcoming royal engagements, including a state visit to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. She had also worked for the social development ministry in Buenos Aires province and at a United Nations office in Panama.

After a flurry of contacts between the two Koreas, South Korean officials suggested to Trump in March that Kim would be willing to meet face-to-face.

Travelling with him were top officials including Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Defence Minister No Kwang Chol and Kim Yong Chol, a close aide of Kim who has been instrumental in the diplomacy that culminated in Tuesday's summit.

Kim met the Singaporean prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, briefly on Sunday, smiling broadly as the two posed for photographs.

At the hotel lobby, grim-faced North Korean security guards warned other hotel guests not to take pictures as Kim walked to his Mercedes Benz limousine.

South Korean president Moon Jae-in was not expected to arrive in Singapore on Tuesday, which also lowered expectations about whether a comprehensive peace treaty to end the Korean War would be formally signed.
